A Foshan man met an untimely demise last Wednesday, when he was fatally hit by a police warning shot, according to the Hong Kong Free Press.

The man was watching a fight unfold between tenants and property management staff from his fifth floor apartment when he was struck by one of two warning shots.

According to the HKFP, the ground-level altercation was the result of a dispute over rent prices at a nearby market and eventually escalated into a knife fight.

“I saw that three men and one woman were caught by the police, but then someone jostled the police,” said a bystander surnamed Shi. “Afterwards, a police officer fired two shots into the air.”

Police were allegedly unaware that anyone had been hit until the victim’s relatives found him three hours later and alerted them. According to the victim’s brother, the body was blood soaked when they found it.

The officer who fired the shots is currently suspended and under investigation.

Sadly, this is the second fatality to arise from a police warning shot in the past 18 months in Foshan. The first incident involved a young boy, according to media reports. Foshan Police were unavailable when our staff contacted them for further comment.
