Sometimes you never know what is actually in an ATM until you try to withdraw cash.
A woman surnamed Xu recently learned that lesson the hard way when she tried to withdraw money from a Bank of Communications ATM in Jiaxing, Zhejiang province. To her surprise, instead of receiving the RMB10,000 she had attempted to withdraw, she got three pieces of blank sheets instead, according to Sohu.
The sheets were similar in size and thickness to your standard RMB100 banknotes, with five black squares spread across. Along the bottoms of the blank sheets was a small line of text that read: "test notes for 2010."
"I have only heard of ATM spitting out counterfeit notes before," Xu told the media. "Never did I know you could withdraw blank paper from it." Xu immediately called the police. After watching surveillance video, police concluded the papers came from an ATM maintenance firm.
Later, staff from the ATM company Jetco came to the police station and explained that they had repaired the ATM a few days prior. After the repair, they used test notes to give it a trial run to see if it was working properly. The three test notes were most likely left there by the workers themselves.
The Bank of Communications responded, saying: "We will return the real bank notes to Ms. Xu soon and settle the matter after we have made a thorough investigation.”
