Leticia Sabater, a Spanish singer, has gained Twitter fame (and ridicule) after accepting an invitation from a Kim Jong-un impostor to perform at North Korea’s 'Festival of Uranium'.
The amusing exchange started on Friday after Sabater, a former presenter and actress, tweeted an invite to her 11,500 followers to appear in her new video. “Kim Jong-un” responded by saying “Hello Leticia, as you know this year it is the Festival of Uranium and we would like to discuss it with you, what are your details?”
She didn’t pick up on the nuclear power reference and asked “What’s that?”, a response that received 261 retweets and 110 favourites within minutes. “An international culture festival that features a Spanish contingency and all kinds of artists,” replied @norcoreano, to the amusement of his 144,000 followers. He added that “money is no problem”, which gained another 190 retweets.
Sabater seemed unaware of the barrage of attention from both her followers and those of @norcoreano, which means North Korean in Spanish. He then confirmed to his followers “we are in negotiations to get Leticia Sabater involved in the Festival of Uranium”.
She responded by posting her email address and asking for more details, after which the pay and schedule negotiations continued in a series of private messages. @norcoreano tweeted them to his followers but they have since been deleted.
He even told her she wouldn’t have to sing live, saying they have a recording and would only require a couple of songs and one duet with Carlos Baute, a Venezuelan singer. At this point, she was totally buying it and responded by saying “you have my email, if you want to email me the offer a half-hour performance and prelude on May 24 and 25... or send it to me today if you want, that's great, I'll have a look and let you know.”
@norcoreano tweeted that he’ll send her an offer this week and added he was currently sealing a deal with Darek (a celebrity stripper) and Dinio (a Cuban singer and porn star). And yet she still believed him.
Even after many highly amused Twitter users tweeted at Sabater about getting to meet Dennis Rodman, Kim Jong-un’s bromance buddy, she still didn’t seem to realise she was being played for a fool, nor of the rising tensions between the reclusive state and the West, or why it would be a bad idea to play a show in North Korea.
Impersonating Kim Jong-un seems to be a lucrative business these days. Earlier this month, a barbecued-meat street vendor saw his business grow after he started cultivating an eerie resemblance to the North Korean man-child.
