For those who know the inconvenience of spending their days on a high-speed train, China is set to introduce ‘red-eye’ high-speed bullet trains between Shanghai, Beijing and Guangzhou. By the end of this year, high-speed trains will run overnight in order to meet growing demand from passengers.
According to Caixin, the China Railway Corporation (CRC) tested the overnight trains over the Spring Festival period, which has diminished safety concerns and given them adequate experience to operate the trains successfully. The CRC also stated that the overnight trains would attempt to decrease the rising traffic issues and crowds on trains.
China Daily reports that China Railway Rolling Stock Corp Ltd plans to equip ‘red-eye’ trains with sleeping cars. The first trains to run overnight will run at a speed of 250 kilometers per hour, but this is expected to increase to 350 kilometers per hour.
As more people look to the railway as a cheaper and more efficient mode of transportation, demand is set to increase over the next few years. To combat this, the CRC also reportedly plans to introduce double-decker trains. Double decker bullet trains are already available in France and Japan.
