John Oliver Floats Kenny G Solution to Pacify China

“Atop the Great Wall the other day, savoring the great silent woods below, I was assaulted by Kenny G,” Evan Osnos memorably wrote in 2009. Though an astute commentator on China, the New Yorker’s one-time man in Beijing probably never thought to return fire. Luckily, John Oliver has pointed out that the frizzy-haired saxophonist is in fact America’s “secret weapon” against an aggressive China.

According to Oliver, all the US need do to avoid conflict over China’s controversial island building in the disputed waters of the South China Sea is exploit  Chinese people’s Pavlovian response to Kenny G’s dulcet “Going Home,” a musical cue piped through the loudspeakers of markets and malls at closing time to signal it’s time to go home. “If we could only harness that subliminal suggestion for good, we could all live in a slightly safer world,” Oliver says.
