Jun 4: Gilad Hekselman Trio

Gilad Hekselman has been a feature of the international jazz scene for over 10 years. Although born and raised in Israel, it was in New York that he perfected his guitar technique and took his first steps into recording with Small Records in 2006. He went on to produce five brilliant albums with his sixth, Ask for Chaos scheduled for release by Motema Records September 7, 2018.

Jun 6: Iceage

Awesome menacing punk music here from Danish group Iceage. Having teamed up with Sky Ferreira for a track on their last album, Beyondless, they have certainly ingratiated themselves with the cool kids. It doesn’t hurt that they were signed to Matador Records after just one studio album. Catch vocalist Elias Bender Ronnenfelt do his best Nick Cave impression when they get to Shanghai.

Jun 7: Brawl on the Bund

Brawl on the Bund is a charity boxing event held in Shanghai by White Collar Boxing China. The night attracts over 500 people for a black-tie dinner to watch a series of boxing matches with regular Shanghai residents who have trained professionally for three months.

Jun 7-9: iStage Spring Art Festival

Another great event for all the family this month. Catch fabulous performances of classics like Beauty and the Beast, Three Blind Mice, Adventures in Oz and more by a group of young performers. This three-day event is sure to be a thrill for kids and adults alike.

Jun 7-9: Brew for Love – Craft Beer Festival

Presented by local craft beer pioneer, Shanghai Love Brewing, Brew for Love is a 100% non-profit festival, with all event proceeds going to Heart to Heart to help children with heart defects. The festival features only local Chinese brews, collaborations, and Chinese-born restaurant concepts, with one of the festival’s aims to give back to the community. This year Brew For Love will once again feature big-name craft breweries from all over China and local gourmet stars such as Funkadeli, Homeslice, Azul and more.

Jun 8: Motorama

On the back of their 2018 album release, Many Nights, Russian post punks Motorama return to China. Employing empty space and atmospherics, the band are adept at adding layers of depth to similar guitar and drum structures.

Jun 8: Kraak & Smaak Live in Shanghai

Bar Rouge Shanghai is setting the scene to welcome Dutch producers Kraak & Smaak on Saturday, June 8. Expect upbeat renditions of funky, jazz & nu-disco tunes; an ecclectic mix of sharp sounds for a night of vibrant rhythms.The Dutch producer trio consists of Oscar de Jong, Mark Kneppers and Wim Plug and released their first album Boogie Angst all the way back in 2005.

Jun 8-9: Popular Mechanics

Inspired by the work with the same name written by American short story writer Raymond Carver, the show was created by the New Youth Group in 2018. When ordinary people are cast rather than professional actors and actresses, how will their temperaments and life experiences bring changes to the characters, lines, reality and the boundaries of selves in the theatre? Come to the theater and find out.

Jun 9: Walk: Shanghai 1940: Lillia's Story in Shanghai's Jewish Ghetto

Author Rachel DeWoskin brings the Hongkou Jewish ghetto to life in her new novel, Someday We Will Fly, and she’ll share the stories and the sites featured in the book on this special walk with Historic Shanghai. It’s 1940, and 15-year-old Lillia has fled from Warsaw to Shanghai, the only place they can find that will accept Jews without visas. Rachel’s harrowing historical novel brings to life a lesser-known side of Shanghai’s history.

June 9 & 11-16: CATS

CATS is one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history. Since its premiere, it has been presented in over 30 countries, translated into 15 languages and seen by over 73 million people worldwide. And in June it's headed right here to Shanghai. The event will take place at Shanghai Culture Square on June 9 and 11-16 (times vary).
