World Black TOT Day with CMYKY, Changsha @ Sugar Area
Sugar Area hosts Ethan, founder of CMYK Changha, ranked No. 16 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025, and the chef from his RGB restaurant, Ming. Together they will be tossing out drinks ‘n’ bites in celebration of ‘World Black TOT Day.’
And what is that? Well…
According to history, when the British Navy was transporting sugar and other goods from Jamaica, rum came to replace beer as the standard beverage of sailors.
In 1655, the Royal Navy imposed a daily rationing, whereby mariners could enjoy their portion of sweet rum from 11am-12 noon, a segment of the day referred to as ‘Up Spirits.’
The rum ration was meant to motivate the men working in hard manual labor, and acted as a kind of medicinal tonic, because lime juice was later added to prevent scurvy. This mixture of rum, water, and lime is what became known as ‘Grog.’
Unfortunately, as seafaring and warfaring on the seas became more complex, sobriety was required, and rum rations were gradually cut over the years, finally reduced to zero on July 31, 1970.
The day is known as ‘Black TOT Day’ because mock funerals were held for the rum ration, and black armbands were worn in mourning of the boozy-groggy tradition.
So make way to Sugar Area for a celebration of maritime intoxication on this historic day!
