26 Restaurants Got Michelin Stars in First Shanghai Guide

The day Shanghai's chefs have been fretting about for a year is finally upon us: the release of the first Shanghai Michelin GuideNot only is this a first for our fair city, it's also a first for Chinese mainland For a city to even get a dedicated guide reveals that it has entered an exclusive club that includes dining meccas like Hong Kong, Paris, New York and Tokyo. 

But then again, it's not like China wasn't already making delicious food for the few last thousand years, is it now?

Without much further ado, the crème de la crème of eateries as decided by Michelin.

Three Stars

1. T'ang Court

Traditional Cantonese/Shanghainese. Situated in Xintiandi's Langham Hotel, T'ang Court's sister restaurant in Hong Kong also has three stars. 

Two Stars

2. 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana

Italian fine dining. Sister restuarant to Otto e Mezzo Bombana HK, the only Italian restaurant outside Italy to have three stars. 

3. L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon

French fine dining. Michelin Guide poster child Chef Joël Robuchon's Michelin Star count will now stand at 35, more than anyone else in the world. 

4. Ultraviolet

French Avant Garde. Chef Paul Pairet's 10-seat, multi-sensory resaurant also scooped 42nd place in The World's 50 Best Restaurants list.

5. Yongfoo Elite

Shanghainese. Elegantly housed in a 1930's villa in the former French Concession, Yongfoo Elite entertains its guests on over 1,000 pieces of antique furniture. 

6. Imperial Treasure

Cantonese and dim sum. From a Singapore-based chain. 

7. Canton 8

Cantonese and dim sum. 

8. Yi Long Court

Cantonese and dim sum. Situated in The Peninsula Hotel 

One Star

9 & 10. Da Dong Roast Duck

Beijing roast duck. World famous import from Beijing.

11. Sir Elly's

European fine dining. 

12. E' Fu Ren (Madam Goose)

Cantonese and dim sum. This restaurant is one of the more affordable on the list, and is known for having some of the best roast goose in the city.

13. Fu He Hui

Fine dining vegetarian Chinese. An elegant, meat-free restaurant by local master chef Tony Lu, also No.18 on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants list. 

14. PHENIX

Contemporary French. Situated in the PuLi Hotel.

15. Le Patio et La Famille (Nan Lu.ZheLi, Julu Lu branch)

Hangzhou cuisine.  

16. Shang High

Chinese. Situated in the Jumeirah Himalayas Hotel Shanghai. 

17. Seventh Son

Cantonese and dim sum. 

18. Jin Xuan

Cantonese and dim sum. Situated in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel Pudong.

19. Kanpai Classic

Taiwanese BBQ

20 & 21. Lei Garden iapm and IFC

Cantonese and dim sum.

22. Jade Mansion

Chinese. 

23. Tai'an Table

European fine dining. By German chef Stefan Stiller, who is also behind East Eatery (see Bib Gourmand section below).

24. Xin Rong Ji

Cantonese and dim sum. 

25. Yong Yi Ting

Chinese fine dining. Situated in the Mandarin Oriental Pudong Hotel.

26. Lao Zheng Xing

Shanghainese.

Well, well, well. Quite a few surprises on that list eh? And a few big names missing too. One thing we know for sure, the Michelin Inspectors sure do have a taste for Cantonese and French food.

Bib Gourmand Restaurants

But that's not all, there were also dozens of restaurants that scooped the Bib Gourmand – an award that commends "fantastic cooking at prices under RMB200 per person."
