The incredibly popular Sina.com, one of China's most visited news websites is facing suspension by national authorities because it keeps publishing "illegal" content (i.e. essentially anything other than Xinhua copy).

According to the Cyberspace Administration of China (couldn't just say 'internet,' guys?) Sina has "spread illegal information related to rumors, violence and terrorism, pornography, swindling, advocation of heresies and has distorted news facts, violated morality and engaged in media hype."
That list essentially just sounds like the internet itself. If you took the pornography, rumors, distorted news facts, violated morals and media hype out of the internet, what would be left?
According to the People's Daily, Sina has "promised they will intensify censorship and publish more information with 'positive energy.'" In other words, kiss your rumors and your porn goodbye, and say hello to a heap of inane China Daily-style human interest pieces about brave PLA soldiers or dedicated civil servants.
Authorities have outright threatened to shut down Sina's news services, a bold move against the fourth-most-visited site in China.
Along with this month's exposure of 'The Great Cannon,' it looks like China is taking its internet censorship to new heights - and we're all along for the ride. Hold those VPNs tight, folks, who knows how much longer they'll continue to work.
