Police in Dongguan, Guangdong province launched a massive crackdown on the city's prostitution industry after a report by CCTV.
Up to 67 people were arrested and 12 websites involved with prostitution were shut down, including those of several iconic luxury hotels.
According to video shot by an undercover CCTV reporter, "beauty pageants" featuring prostitutes and strippers were being held for customers at several entertainment venues. Fees ranged from the hundreds to thousands of yuan, depending on the service requested.
"You just lie down there and the lady will serve you all around," one female manager said in the video.
Speaking to CCTV before the raids, one hotel proprietor wasn't concerned about the potential risks of running an illegal prostitution ring. "We are all safe from the police here," one manager said.
Dongguan has been referred to as China's "capital of sex" for over a decade. Sociologist Li Yinhe told the Global Times that while prostitution and pornography is common across the country, it is particularly prevalent in Dongguan because of the city's loose controls.
