On Thursday, a Beijing mother wrote an article detailing her 10-year-old son’s traumatic experience being bullied at one of Haidian’s prestigious primary schools. The article quickly went viral and has since been shared over 100,000 times on WeChat and over six million times on Weibo, Xinhua reports.
The article has sparked public outrage over the issue of bullying in schools.
This particular incident, which is currently under investigation, took place at Zhongguancun No. 2 Primary School (pictured above). According to the mother’s article, her son was bullied for over a year and was recently very seriously traumatized after he was taunted and then hit in the head by a trashcan by a bully. The article went on to say that the school believed the incident was merely a "joke that went too far."
According to a statement released by the parents of the victim on Saturday, their son was recently diagnosed with acute distress disorder and that he no longer wants to go back to the school.
"We are accompanying him to adjust," the boy's father said. "And he will not return to school until the case is closed."
Given the outrage that has emerged since the mother's article was released, the school is urging the pubic to allow the matter to be solved privately by school administrators and the families involved.
"The school has been actively talking with the relevant parents to solve the dispute objectively and fairly. Further effort will be made to achieve an outcome that is recognized by all parties," they said in a statement on Saturday.
The school has also announced that it will focus on bullying prevention to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
