Customs officials in Ningbo last week stopped a man who was allegedly attempting to smuggle in a live lobster from Australia. The man had transited through Hong Kong and was found carrying a live lobster weighing 3.16 kilograms and packaged in sawdust. Ningbo officials say it was the first time that they had seized a live lobster in customs.

The man had recently visited Australia and loved the taste of lobster so much that he tried to transport one back to Chinese mainland The man allegedly paid EUR500 (RMB3,500) for the lobster and wanted to enjoy it with his friends and family in Ningbo.

The lobster was discovered by a trained customs dog, who then alerted quarantine officials.

Quarantine and inspection officials say that present officials were sterilized and the lobster was destroyed in accordance with Chinese customs law. According to the law of the People's Republic of China, all live animals (excluding cats and dogs) are prohibited from entering the mainland's borders.

Chinese netizens poked fun at the incident, insinuating that the lobster was most definitely eaten by Chinese officials, rather than destroyed. Other commenters suggested that destroying the lobster was a waste due to its size and price.
