That’s Shenzhen takes a look at the best of the week:
Until Jul 11: ON/OFF Parking Lot Project

Finding art in unexpected places can be a delightful discovery. OCT Loft has invited 13 groups of artists to paint in parking lots, with the goal of repurposing a utilitarian space into a vibrant public meeting space. “Different from other public spaces, a parking lot is a space defined by the management of urban traffic order. This space is both private and public, contradictory and coexisting,” said Zhu Decai, curator of the ON/OFF exhibition. This is the last week the exhibition is running. Don’t miss out!

Promoted as one of the most anticipated events for South China’s French nationals each year, French National Day 2019 will be a lively and eventful evening for locals and expats alike. The gathering will serve as a platform for guests to communicate with executives from international companies, as well as other prominent members of the French and Chinese communities. With a significant media presence and many businesspeople in attendance, the French National Day event provides an excellent opportunity for networking and the potential to forge new professional partnerships. Exquisite French cuisine and Chinese dim sum will be in abundance throughout the evening and, of course, a selection of French wines to pair. Between the food and drinks, the ambiance and live music performed all night long, everyone is sure to feel ‘the love of the French’ throughout the event. You may even feel like you’re in France for a few hours.
Fri-Sun, July 12-14: French Musical: Romeo and Juliette

Touring around the world for more than 15 years, Romeo and Juliette, with music and lyrics by Gérard Presgurvic, arrives in Shenzhen this week! The musical takes a Shakespearian classic and puts a modern spin on the tale. The story of two star-crossed lovers is expressed through a fusion of classical dance mixed with hip hop (yes, you read that right). To note, the show will be performed in French and accompanied by Chinese subtitles.

Until Jul 14: Ron English: English Translations Series

The first stop of The Celebrated Prankster and Godfather of Street Art is in Shenzhen at the Pop Art Space, Q-Plex! In this new series, Ron English reimagines icons of pop culture through the prism of his unique hyper-surrealistic mind. The brush strokes of his old contemporary Jean-Michel Basquiat morph into flames revealing an internal alien behind the expressionistic facade, an obsessively cute elephant grows monarch ears, evolution turns the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex into a 40-foot dinosaur/chicken hybrid and mascots of cartoon culture grin with such abandon they reveal their inner selves. ‘English’ becomes a language where everything is at once soothingly familiar and jarringly foreign.
Until Jul 15: Watch Live Games at McCawley’s

Cheer on your favorite teams and have a beer or two at McCawley’s in Futian. It’ll be your stop to catch the ICC Cricket World Cup until July 15. There are daily themed food and beverage specials from 3-10pm. Come check it out!
