Reset for the Fall: It's Never Too Late to Go After Your Goals

At the turn of the new year, all sorts of motivational words and ideas are thrown out into the universe for you to put away the past and focus on what lies ahead: Transformation; Change; Goals; New Year, New Me.

For many – if not all of us – the goals we set at the start of 2020 probably haven’t shaped into what we had outlined for ourselves at the start of the year (speaking both mentally and physically).

But, despite what has (or has not) happened, growth can begin at any time, not just January 1. Here are a few suggestions to stop, reevaluate, reset and get after the change you want to be this fall.

Stop

There is no point in lamenting what you had set as your target(s) for this year. Instead of living in the hope of the past, let it go and start taking the steps you can to challenge yourself in the coming months.

Reevaluate

Is there something you really wanted to accomplish this year that has been postponed? Is there something you can do now (a smaller step) to align with that goal? Or have things changed altogether and you’re trying to figure out what your current aims are?

Make a list of everything you hoped to accomplish and see what that translates for where you’re at now.

Think outside the box and get creative. So the marathon you hoped to do has been cancelled? Why not still train for a long distance, see if a few friends can join, then celebrate together? Hoped to have shed 10kg by now? Work on the first five for now, and see how you feel once you get there.

Reset

Write everything down. Circle the top three. Put a square around the top one. That’s your main focus. Now, write three targets that will help you achieve that goal this week. Make them attainable, i.e.

Goal: I’m running that marathon.

Targets:

  1. This week I will go out three times per week

  2. One of the distances will be 2km longer

  3. One of those runs will be with a friend

Continue this process for the following week, as well as setting an end date for the big goal and really mapping out your plan.

Get After It!

Tell a close friend your goal to help keep you accountable and then Go. After. It. You don’t need to wait for a certain date, or someone to tell you to get off the couch. It’s time for you to take 2020 by the reigns and set out to make the rest of this year yours.
