It's a common conundrum. You love watermelon juice on a hot day, but you also love beer.
The guys at Beijing craft brewery Jing A are going out on a limb to solve that problem with their 'Beijing Bikini Watermelon Wheat' beer, set to make its Shanghai comeback tonight with a launch party at Hooked in Found 158.
Available every summer in Beijing, the beer is made with a variety of watermelons grown in Daxing by the so-called "King of Watermelons," a farmer who goes by Lao Song.
As for the taste of the beer itself, That's Beijing chief editor Noelle Mateer describes it as non-sweet, yet deeply fruity and "sessionable." That's craft beer speak for "you can probably drink a shit ton of it in one sitting."
To celebrate the return of the Beijing Bikini Watermelon Wheat (the name is a nod to all the Beijing uncles who start wearing their shirts rolled up over their bellies when the hot weather hits), Hooked will be pouring it all night for RMB35 per glass.
They'll also be holding a watermelon eating contest at the launch party from 4pm onwards. Winners of each round (six in total) will receive one free watermelon beer. A final showdown between the six champs of each round will help determine who receives the grand prize.
