That's Shanghai takes a look at some of the week's best upcoming F&B events and promotions: 


Oct 16: Wholesome Chinese Cooking Class

Learn to cook wholesome Chinese food with local chef Shiyin Wang. The course focuses on teaching traditional Chinese methods to cook healthy, mostly plant-based, whole foods. Dinner and wine are provided. Veggies are provided courtesy of Fields. Please go to the location listed on the flyer.

Oct 17: Wine Wine Dinner at Wujie

Attention vegetarians (and friends)! Michelin-starred restaurant Wujie is serving a creative and colorful eight-course meal paired with Wine & the City's choice of exclusive white wines. From your welcome glass of champagne to each photo-ready plate of nourishing food, you are bound to enjoy the night. We even expect your most veggie-food skeptical friend to fall in love.

Oct 17: El Rey del Barrio

FUNKA del Sur is hosting the second edition of El Rey del Barrio aka 'King of the Hood' on October 17th. This time, guest chef Thomazini (formerly of Boteco) will be joining Chef Hugo Rodriguez for a special menu of Brazilian street food and drink specials. The coxinha (giant chicken croquetas) and churrasco platter have our attention. We just recommend that you show up early because they sold out of food super fast last month.

Oct 17-21: COMMA Grand Opening

COMMA quietly opened on Xinle Lu a few months ago and you will not want to miss their official grand opening extravaganza. The five-day event features complimentary sake, a Craft Republic guest keg, guest bartending shift by Shirley from The Cut, brunch specials, DJ, beer pong tournament, Street Fighter challenges and so much more.

Oct 18: Dom Carella at Atelier

Domenico Carella, the current bar manager for Pirata Group in Hong Kong, is back for his first guest shift in Shanghai since he left 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana. He has ten years of experience as a chef and a profound knowledge of ingredients. To Dom, the bar is a "liquid kitchen." He's worked for some of the world's best bars, including DRY Milan, BOKAN in London's Canary Wharf and the Michelin-starred Andrea Berton. Lucky for you he is in Shanghai for the weekend to take your senses on a whirlwind journey!

Oct 18: Ministry of Negroni

The 12th installment of Funkadeli's popular Ministry of Negroni series is back. This month Daniele Baldo (restaurant manager and mixologist at Va Bene) will be shaking up his own unique variations on the Negroni. Baldo will be utilizing molecular mixology techniques to create Campari caviar for the Viceversa Negroni, which we can't wait to try.

Oct 18: Fall Wine Tasting

The American Wine Merchants are inviting you to a wine tasting. Go, because they really know their stuff. The wines offered are perfect for the autumn season, with an assortment of tidbits to refresh your palate. Have a chat with other wine-lovers as you celebrate fall’s arrival. Book your spot early because the first 25 people to RSVP get a taste of limited edition wine!

Oct 18-20: East Imperial Gin Jubilee

Revisit East Imperial gin with a selection of new twists on the gin and tonic! The annual Jubilee will span across 12 of Shanghai's best bars, with your favorite bartenders serving up their versions of the classic cocktail. Try Chase's "Nostalgia" at Beverly, with smoked maple syrup and yuzu sauce. Or if you love fruits, head to The Zuk and give Max's "Wind Rose" a go. The drink has amaro, pineapple skin and oloroso. Who knew gin could be so exciting? 

For the grand finale, Gin Lane will be held on The Shanghai EDITION's eight-floor garden terrace from 5-9pm. Find out who will walk away with the gold for their cocktail creation. Furthermore, this green event is on the #NoStraws and #NoPlastic bandwagon.

Oct 18-21: Best of British Show

Best of British Show has everything you love about Britain. Bringing together 150 brands from the United Kingdom, this showcase will display a range of products, experiences and adventures. Pretend you are in the UK as you sample tea and scones or fish and chips with a nice pint. Everyone is welcome to revel in the royal red, white and blue at this fun-packed exhibition.

Oct 19-20: Pintxos Night Market |西班牙串串来袭!

For two nights only, award-winning chef Danyi Gao transforms SHAKE into a Spanish night market. This is Spanish Chuan Chuan. You can grab dishes from the bar, like Porcini with country pate and crunchy Bread, or choose from 4 cooked-to-order dishes like Octopus with potatoes, smoked paprika, and olive. Danyi will be cooking each night and celebrating her recent That's Shanghai 2018 Chef of the Year victory. Dishes available from 6pm, followed by live funk and soul by SHAKE's six-piece band and guest singers from 10:30pm. After 9pm, the cover charge is 80rmb.

Oct 19-22: ZAX BBQ at The Camel

Calling all meat lovers! Zac is bringing his Zhengzhou-famous American-style BBQ to The Camel in Shanghai. Tear into some smoked BBQ beef ribs, munch on some BBQ Pizza or grab a smoked bourbon burger. One taste and you will be ready to crown Zac as King of the Grill. Don't miss this celebration of meaty goodness.

Oct 20: Oktoberfest at Zeitgeist

Oktoberfest fever has hit Shanghai and Zeitgeist has definitely got one of the most authentically German celebrations around. Grab a drink (or a few) at the beer garden as you munch on some grilled fish, bratwursts and other delicious treats. If you can handle it, go inside for a full-on three-course meal with a Brander Urstoff beer. Think tons of food and even more alcohol. Celebrate the German way!

Oct 20: Wuding Lu Block Party

These Saturday, your favorite bars Jing'an bars come together at the Yanping Lu/Wuding Lu intersection of fun for an unforgettable Block Party. Your entrance fee is redeemable for eight drink at your choice of ten bars including Bar Centrale, Bites and Brews, Barbarian, Funka Del Sur, SIP, Malabar, Ola, Taoker and more. The party starts at 6PM, so come early and have a great time at Jing An's hottest entertainment street, Wuding Lu.

Oct 20: Pumpkin Carving Competition

You couldn't ask for an activity that says Halloween more than a pumpkin carving competition. Head to The Rooster and unleash your inner Michelangelo as you carve a masterpiece in jack-o-lantern art. Entry ticket includes a pumpkin and a refreshing Budweiser (or soft drink) plus the chance to win one of three top prizes. The Rooster crew is ever charitable, and this event's surplus will be donated to support children with down syndrome.

Oct 21: Sunset Rooftop Party

Blackbird recently unveiled their rooftop terrace - The Third Floor as it's so aptly named - and are celebrating the incoming of fall with a p-a-r-t-y. There'll be delicious snacks (like lamb shoulder), hand-selected beverages from the Wine and the City team (like Jermann Pinot Grigio, Friuli, 2016) and an opportunity to break out your fanciest flannels and favorite sweater. We've got a few good weeks of weather this season, so make the most of it over at Columbia Circle this Sunday.

Oct 21: The Botanist Lunch at Botanik

If gin is your booze of choice, you understand the importance of botanicals. It is the various herbs and plants that form the backbone of a finely crafted gin. Botanik is home to a bountiful rooftop garden making it the ideal location for a special lunch showcasing The Botanist gin, foraged flavors and artisanal tonics. Chef Elijah Holland's exceptional cuisine is another stellar reason to attend.

Until Oct 31: Hairless Crab Festival

While the rest of Shanghai succumbs to the pleasures of eating hairy crabs, The Nest is offering an alternative 'hairless' sweet stone crab special. Each super meaty crustacean will be discounted to RMB398. Respect your crab as is with melted butter or choose from flavors including black pepper, flaming brandy, red hot chili and Handsome Han's special (ginger and wild garlic). There's also a short menu of special cocktails available for the occasion. Plus during the National Holiday all bottles are 50 percent off, so make sure to go this week.

Until Oct 31: Oktoberfest at Geneva

Oktoberfest is a big deal at Geneva. The traditional German celebration call for a giant feast and this one showcases a 4-5kg suckling pig with side dishes and mini desserts. Free-flow is also an option,  so go in hungry, get hammered and arrive home happy.

Oct 28: PAPP'S TEA Kombucha Workshop

Kombucha has been brewed in China for hundreds of years. Now you can learn about this wonderful probiotic tea through a workshop hosted by PAPP'S TEA! Join Martin Papp, the founder of the brand, as he explains to you the health benefits of kombucha. Learn about probiotics and how kombucha can counteract the damages done by our modern lifestyle.
