Four first-year high school girls in Wuqi County, Shaanxi Province were threatened by seven other students in the year above to sell their virginity to local government officials, and were later violently attacked after refusing to do so last September, the Legal Weekly reports.
The four girls were summoned to a dorm room where they were verbally abused, beaten up, cut, forced to take off their clothes and have half-naked photos taken of themselves. One of the attackers threatened two of the victims with a knife, saying that the photos would go out if their teachers or parents found out about it.
The four were called in by their seniors after their names were forced out of a fellow student who was threatened into informing them who the “pretty ones” were among the new students.
The four girls were also examined to see if they were virgins, and forced to play rock, paper, scissors and slap each other on the face.
The torture went on for over eight hours, resulting in two victims suffering minor injuries while the other two had their eardrums perforated. The girls were in hospital for over 20 days, and one of them still suffers from hearing problems.
Parents of the girls who committed the violent act told reporter that their children were also victims, stating that the two leaders of the girls had RMB1.2 million and RMB800,000 in their bank accounts respectively, which was given to them by a group of businessmen looking for virgins to offer to local officials as gifts.
Six of the attackers were detained on September 26 while another got away without criminal punishment since she was under 16 when she committed the attack.
After the school denied any responsibility, the parents of the victims resorted to the city’s Education Bureau and Petition Bureau, where they were either ignored or chased out.
While petitioning the municipal government, the three parents were even detained for five days for “disturbing the municipal government’s administrative work order,” and were forced to sign a letter promising they wouldn’t petition again as a condition of their release.
The standing committee of the county People’s Congress has since confirmed that one of their members, also head of the village, is involved with this case and has been held in police custody under suspicion of inducing and arranging prostitution.
The procurator says that the case is currently under investigation.
