Chinese internet seethes with outrage after cleavage cut from historical drama

Popular TV show The Empress of China was pulled from Chinese screens for "technical reasons" in December of last year, and has now returned with a notable lack of boobs.

Many speculate, as Xinhua quotes, that the show was taken down due to "the much-discussed revealing costumes of female characters on the show," i.e. the fact that every lady on screen had a shirt that ended somewhere a few inches above her belly button.

Chinese TV producers had finally cracked the code: Add cleavage. Empress's first episode broke TV drama records in the country, but it was promptly taken down and given a thorough de-boobing before being re-aired.

Removing the TV show's most titillating feature (stop me if I'm being too subtle) has thrown viewers into an angry frenzy. When Sina Weibo conducted a survey, more than 95% of voters sided with the "we want boobs" argument. While Weibo surveys are far from scientific, we're willing to take this one at face value.

Bloggers have not taken kindly to the un-breasting of Empress, and have gone ahead and made these wonderful tongue-in-cheek images depicting what the show will look like sans-cleavage, presumably in an attempt to help out censors.
