The Hurun Research Institute released the Hurun Philanthropy List 2014 on Tuesday, a ranking of the 100 most generous individuals from Chinese mainland

Jack Ma, currently the wealthiest man in China, also tops the list for the first time after donating USD 2.4 billion in Alibaba stocks. Beijing-based real estate tycoons Huang Rulun and Wang Jianlin of Wanda came in second and third with donations of USD 97 million and USD 73 million. Huang is the most consistent donor on the Hurun Philanthropy List, making the Top 10 every year since records began.

It is worth noting that the former premier Zhu Rongji became the first senior politician in China to make the list, with donations amounting to USD 4 million from book royalties.

According to the list, donations to disaster relief increased significantly, mainly due to an earthquake in Sichuan province. Education, however, again led the way as the cause of choice making up 26% of donations.

Real estate tycoons led the way, making up 48% of the list, significantly higher than the percentage on the Hurun Rich List, where they made up just 19%.

Guangdong philanthropists remained the most generous with 28 philanthropists born there.  Fujian punched above its weight yet again whilst people born in Zhejiang, who lead the way on the Hurun Rich List, are noticeably absent on the Philanthropy List.

22% have senior political appointments at the CPPCC or NPC, higher than the Hurun China Rich List, where the figure stands at 13.7%.

Donations were measured by the value of their cash or cash equivalent from 1 January 2013 to 31 March 2014, and included significant donations, defined as more than RMB 100 million (USD16.7 million). 2014 marks the tenth anniversary of the list.
