Red alerts were issued by authorities in northern China on May 23 for a sandstorm which lasted six hours

In Yumen, Gansu Province, residents were plunged into near darkness as the sandstorm enveloped the city. This is the second month in a row that the province has been hit by severe sandstorms. In April, visibility was reduced to just 50 metres (164 feet).
