'Dead' baby wakes up minutes before cremation

A baby boy declared dead by hospital staff had a lucky escape when he started crying at a funeral parlour just minutes before he was due to be cremated.

Anhui Provincial Children's Hospital had issued a death certificate for the boy, who was found alive by staff at the funeral parlour in Hefei. They returned to the hospital for emergency treatment, presumably with an angry note about only sending them dead patients from now on.

The baby suffers from a congenital respiratory system malformation and is critically ill. His parents agreed with hospital staff to give up treatment on November 12. It is unclear how he was mistakenly declared dead. A doctor on duty has been suspended pending an investigation, while a nurse who was supposed to be taking care of the boy has been fired, the hospital announced.

The boy is still undergoing emergency treatment.
