The next time you’re stuck in one of Beijing’s horrendous traffic jams take solace in the fact that there are actually other Chinese cities that have worse traffic than the capital. It’s hard to believe, but according to an annual report by AutoNavi, the Chinese navigation service, Beijing is no longer China’s most traffic-riddled city.
Beijing did rank number one in the company's 2015 study. However, in 2016 both Jinan and Harbin suffered more severe traffic jams than the capital.
It’s not all good news for Beijing, however. According to the study – which surveyed 60 Chinese cities – Jinan, Harbin, Beijing and Chongqing were the only cities that ranked above a 2.0 on the traffic jam delay index. That means that during rush hour it takes Beijingers two times longer to get to their destination than it would during regular hours.
Guiyang, Shenzhen, Kunming, Hangzhou, Dalian and Guangzhou all placed in the top 10 worst Chinese cities for traffic in 2016. Shanghai, which came in at number seven last year, did not make it in the top 10 in the latest study.
So it appears cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have all showed an improvement in congestion compared to last year.
