Today marked the 79th anniversary of the Nanjing Massacre.

To commemorate the day, memorial activities were staged throughout the city for the third annual Nanjing Massacre Memorial Day. The brutal event saw more than 300,000 people killed — including civilians — in the span of six weeks by Japanese forces in 1937.

Hundreds gathered in the rain to partake in the tribute.
