Forget about sunscreen, hats, parasols or any other form of sun protection. Welcome the return of the facekini, a face mask for swimming! The masks took off in China, where the concept of beauty correlates to a pale complexion and lack of sun exposure.

In 2004, a new fashion icon emerged from the coastal city of Qingdao by the name of Zhang Shifan. The facekini is designed to shield beach goers from the sun tainting their fair, white skin.

The popularity of the facekini has grown each year with new and improved lines and modifications to the original design. The facekinis cover every inch of the face with small holes left for the eyes, nose and mouth.

Zhang recently revealed what she calls the "fourth generation" of the facekini that is inspired by classic Chinese opera masks. The facekini has been said to protect wearers not only from the sun but also from being stung by jellyfish.

We are glad to see such great improvements from the Summer 2014 line! The facekini continues to be a must-have beach accessory for middle-aged women all over China, especially in its place of origin.

The facekini even made its debut in the CR Fashion Book in 2014. As the popularity of facekinis grows, one thing's for sure, we will never get tired of the pictures flooding the Internet of bank robbers enjoying their time on the beach.
