Wang Yuanping, the head of the Dongshen Branch of the Shenzhen Municipal Public Security Bureau, has landed himself in hot water after he ordered a police patrol for a private banquet, according to Xinhua English News.
The report references a statement, uploaded on Monday to a Shenzhen police microblog, which indicates Wang not only misused the police patrol but also failed to cooperate on an investigation into an assault of several reporters.
The alleged incident occurred January 21.
Why were reporters senselessly assaulted at a banquet dinner? Sadly, because the attendees were tirelessly devouring a giant salamander – an endangered species in China.
The Chinese giant salamander, the largest amphibian in the world, is considered a critically endangered species and its consumption is prohibited.
In 2008, the species was list as one of 10 ‘focal species’ by the Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered project, according to the Chinese Giant Salamander Conservation.
The microblog asserts that Wang directed four officers to patrol the area surrounding a restaurant he was dining at with 18 people.
Attendees to the dinner included 13 police officers, including several retirees, and five drivers.
According to numerous reports police harassed three Southern Metropolis Daily undercover reporters at the event. An article published in the January 26 edition of the paper states that reporters’ cameras were taken by police during the altercation.
Apparently the reporters and over-zealous police officers have made amends and compensation will be awarded to the reports.
Who would be providing the compensation and the amount were not disclosed in the blog post.
