Shenzhen police have busted a car crash blackmail gang that staged car accidents and demanded compensation from drivers ranging from several hundreds to a few thousand RMB.  Two gang members, surnamed Lai and Wong, have been arrested.

The gang was responsible for 120 accidents in the past year, according to the police. It is believed that the gang targeted cars with non-local license plates, especially those from Hong Kong and Macau.

“Gangs find Hongkongers easy prey because their vehicles are insured and they would rather pay up than face the hassle,” said Yiu Kwai, the Vice Chairman of the Organization of Hong Kong Drivers. “Sometimes, local policemen would help the gang collect money from their victims, suggesting collusion.”

A video provided by a Hongkonger, which recorded a similar scam in June may have helped Shenzhen police crack the case, according to Ming Pao Daily.
