Shanghai is set to see the return of the tram to the downtown area after a break of more than 40 years, reports Shanghai Daily.
Plans for 13 kilometers of tram lines were announced yesterday and work on a line between the Xupu and Nanpu bridges along the Huangpu River will start by 2017, according to a three-year construction plan.
The trams will mostly run in Xuhui district, along Longwu Lu or by the riverbank, helping to ease traffic and provide an environmentally friendly transport option for residents and tourists.
Trams were first introduced in Shanghai early in the 20th century and at their peak more than 300 ran in the city. The network was closed in the early 1970s. The only remaining tram route is a line with 15 stops at Zhangjiang High Tech Park in Pudong.
Under new plans, electric trams of four carriages with capacity of 368 people will run on 28.5 kilometers of track (connecting to Metro Line 9) with a maximum speed of 80 kilometers per hour.
