Shanghai Food & Drink Gossip: September 2023

By Sophie Steiner, September 28, 2023

We’re keeping this one short and sweet since – let’s be real – there’s probably only about 17 people left in the entire city still reading WeChat this close to October Holiday.

We know most of you are already laying out on Thai beaches, jetting off on European getaways, or visiting family across the globe, and the last thing you’re thinking about is where is the newest hotspot in town to get lunch tomorrow.

But, we refuse to stray from tradition, and the end of the month always is a time to rehash the latest F&B industry gossip. Without exception.

So, we’ve put together this roundup of juicy details, and you can scope it out at your convenience as you re-enter reality in the weeks to come. You’re welcome.

Scilla is a new concept in Panyu 504, a quaint Shanghai villa on Panyu Lu dating back to 1936. The focus is gastronomy meets architecture, arts and culture, with a Mediterranean menu curated by Executive Chef Stefano Bacchelli (currently of Da Vittorio Shanghai). Grand opening is slated for October.

A new concept by Paul Pairet, Roodoodoo is an all day, every day snack and bakery-centric casual dining concept in Pudong's IFC Mall combining a coffee shop, deli, restaurant, patisserie, boulangerie and ice cream parlor, plus a terrace all into one.

Soft opening is set for the weeks following October holiday, so we will dutifully report back soon.

Café and bakery TonTon just opened in mid-September along the coffee shop-lined street of Yongkang Lu – a bakery and Euro bistro sandwich bar coming to us by the team behind Mavis.

Born out of a love for all things bread, after the team got into making the sourdough for Mavis, they expanded further into baked goods, and TonTon was the glorious offspring.

Downstairs is where the pastry magic happens – with the usual suspects like croissants, pain au chocolate, kouign amann, cinnamon rolls, and donuts – while upstairs is a French-style sandwich bar with seating for 20.

Think warm, pressed sandwiches – like mushrooms melts, tuna melts, and ham with gooey cheese on homemade sourdough or ciabatta.

Just a few blocks away, Mignon 9 – a trendy Parisian style fusion bistro – has opened on Wuyuan Lu. Think roasted chicken, duck foie gras, grilled steaks, pan-fried seafood, pastas and the like, plus aperitivo cocktails and wine.

Second Sister Yunnan Restaurant is a new venue brought to us by the Azul Group, taking up residence in the old Xouk spot in 1000 Trees Mall.

The team kicked off their opening mid-month with free Yunnanese yumminess for all guests, with dishes like Lemongrass Grilled Seabass, Pu’er Braised Fish, Beef Rolls with Mint, Small Pot Rice Noodles, Xishuangbanna Bamboo Rice, and so much more.

And speaking of the Azul Group, Azul celebrated its 20 year anniversary on September 23, one of the longest running Western restaurants in the entire city. Kuddos to the team on a major achievement!

The timeless Shakespearean quote, "the world is your oyster," is coming to life at the Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund.

Drawing inspiration from this motto, the hotel's sixth restaurant, PIИK OYSTER, has opened its doors, located on the lobby floor of the Waldorf Astoria Heritage Building within the Long Bar.

With only eight exclusive seats, the first ever oyster omakase introduces its exclusive 10-11 course autumn degustation of the freshest oysters from around the world.

Guloo Burger– another burger joint in the long line of fast-casual burger spots – opened up on Beijing Xi Lu this summer, dishing out single and double cheeseburgers at pocket-friendly prices.

The bang-for-your-buck burgers are a solid lunch option for the Jing’an working contingency, with crispy fries, stellar homemade pickles, and a ridiculously good breakfast sandwich and coffee deal for just RMB17 from 8-10am daily. Too good to be true.

We checked it out recently and have *spoiler alert* quite a bit to say about it, so look forward reading up on that soon.

JZ Club, which is currently located in Found 158 will be closing its doors by November. But fear ye not, jazz cats! They already have a new spot in Hengshan 8, slated to open that same month.

As for closures, the big one this month was robata-style charcoal grill restaurant Dreamer on Wuding Lu, a part of the BIBIMI Group that also owns a handful of popular venues around town, (Barbarian, Bites & Brews, Solana, and Hot Chick).

And we bring further sad news with the impending closure of Jing'an's Pie Society at the end of October, ending a six-year run. The silver lining is that they are open during October Holiday with a UK-forward DJ lineup and food, so make sure to swing by for those final bites of Brit-style meat pies.
