After nearly three years of major highs and (COVID-fueled) lows in Shanghai's F&B scene, 2022 brought forth one of the most tumultuous years the city has ever faced. Restaurant owners lost count of the number of days they were forced to unexpectedly shutter their doors due to unforeseen lockdowns, COVID flare-ups and dining-in restrictions.
Sadly, many couldn't weather the storm, and more than a few Shanghai institutions fell. But in a city as great as Shanghai, there will always be those that band together and rise from the ashes, carrying the banner through it all.
At a press conference this morning at Shangri-La Qiantan Shanghai, Michelin announced its 2023 picks for Shanghai in their seventh installment of the city's guide. Whether you buy into the Michelin hype or not, the 2023 Michelin Guide is bound to influence our city's chefs, diners and restaurants.
With prestige and influence that can propel a restaurant to the top of the ranks, the Michelin Guide identifies the very best in regional dining, breaking down their picks into seven categories this year: Three Star, Two Star, One Star, Bib Gourmand, Michelin Plate, Young Chef and Service Award.
For a second year in a row, the two venues remain alone at the top of the pack; after welcoming new Chef De Cuisine Christiaan Stoop this summer – one of the youngest Chefs De Cuisine working in a three Michelin star environment in the world – Taian Table was able to retain its triple star status, along with Paul Pairet's Ultraviolet.
A newcomer on the block, 102 House, is making big waves, bypassing one star status entirely and earning itself two stars in its first year on the list. The great shuffle continued as a few institutions fell off the list, their spots taken up quickly by others.
Let's get on with the good stuff. We present to you the full list of this year's winners:
