A special Kiwi food extravaganza featuring premium New Zealand products is coming right here to Shanghai! Eat, drink and experience Kiwi culture during the eighth annual New Zealand Week, which kicks off November 1.
This year’s event is already shaping up to be larger than ever, with 60 New Zealand brands, a two-week calendar of events in five Chinese cities and dozens of participating retailers, cafés, restaurants and hotels featuring New Zealand menus and specials. China is New Zealand’s top export destination with USD13.9 billion worth of trade last year, and over 60% of that made up of food and beverage products.
But New Zealand Week China is more than trade — it’s about sharing Kiwi culture. It’s a time to promote, celebrate and share New Zealand food, culture and tourism with the Chinese community.
The traditional Māori performing art of kapa haka forms an intrinsic element of the New Zealand cultural experience, so it wouldn’t be a proper New Zealand Week without the beloved Raukura Kapa Haka group wowing restaurant goers with authentic waiāta (songs), poi dance and the powerful haka. See the full schedule on the ‘Events’ section of the official New Zealand Week website for more information.
The Modern Māori Quartet is also set to jazz up the week. Made up of four suave Māori musicians, the band will entertain with a feel-good blend of doo-wop, classic pop, storytelling and sweet melodies. Check them out on November 8-9 (Friday and Saturday) at the Lyceum Theatre.
Bringing the Kiwi food culture to life are MasterChef New Zealand winners Kasey and Karena Bird, who will run workshops with local chefs, shoot recipe videos, host a chef table at Egg, serve up traditional Māori hangi-inspired dishes at the Westin brunch and support food events with local partners and New Zealand brands.
Plenty of favorite Shanghai venues feature on the ‘Dine’ section of the program. Highlights include venison pie at M on the Bund, BBQ scampi at el Willy, steak with lobster at Bull & Claw, clam parpadelle at Mr. Willis, kiwi parfait at Egg and baked sole and NZ avocados at BOR Eatery, all using fresh New Zealand ingredients.
The ‘Events’ program has something for everyone, from cultural exhibition Tuku Iho and live music performances, to chef workshops, NZ-style hot pot and free-flow champagne brunches.
Consumers can also find specials on New Zealand products to enjoy at home at participating retailers and online stores, including Kate & Kimi, Riso, G-Super and City Super.
New Zealand week is initiated by New Zealand Trade & Enterprise with support by the extended NZ inc. and community. Fonterra, with their Anchor and NZMP brands, return as this year’s gold sponsors and are a backbone of the promotion. Other key partners include Zespri, ANZ, The Warehouse Group and the New Zealand Consulates in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Chengdu.
New Zealand Week originated as “Kiwi Day.” Since the success of the first annual Kiwi Brunch at the Westin Bund Center eight years ago, the event has since expanded each year to include new venues, cities and features, becoming an increasingly important initiative on the NZ Food and Beverage calendar in China.
