Chaos on Shanghai Metro Train After Man Causes Panic

"Hundreds" of people ran along a subway train in panic during rush hour yesterday after a man caused a mysterious disturbance on Shanghai Metro Line 10.

Shanghai Daily reports that passengers yesterday morning dropped their phones, bags and other belongings before making a dash for it on one of the train's carriages after a man began behaving strangely near Longxi Road Station. What exactly he was doing remains unclear, though some witnesses speculated he was mentally ill.

In a scene that was described as coming straight out of zombie movie, some passengers admitted they didn't know exactly why they were running, with one saying:

“I was sleepy at my seat, when I suddenly saw a crowd of people running toward us... My friend immediately said we should follow them and we ran with the crowd.”

That same passenger estimates that hundreds of people were running.

The Shanghai Metro team posted on its Weibo account that the incident took place at around 8.25am, during peak morning commute hours. They advised passengers to remain calm during such "unexpected events" and call police at the 110 hotline during unsafe situations. They also urge people to stop spreading misinformation that would lead to "panic" among Metro commuters.

In an unrelated incident, an American man died yesterday after collapsing on Line 2, also during rush hour.
