Major delays are set to take place at Shanghai’s Pudong International Airport this afternoon ahead of the maiden flight of China’s very first domestically built passenger plane.

According to the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), airspace will become limited between 1.00 and 3.30pm. Expect delays for flights scheduled during this period.

While CAAC didn’t identify the exact cause of the delays, reports have emerged that the C919 — China’s first homemade passenger jet — will take off from Pudong Airport this afternoon at around 2pm. The flight is scheduled to last for 90 to 120 minutes.

In the evening, dust from a massive sandstorm is also expected to hit Shanghai, which could potentially lead to further delays.

The C919, manufactured by Shanghai-based firm COMAC, could soon compete against France's Airbus and America's Boeing.
