Simple Plan

The Canadian pop punk favorites return to Shanghai after two past sold-out trips. They’ll be celebrating their new album Taking One for the Team, which adds new musical flourishes, like the reggae styled single ‘Singing in the Rain’ to their anthemic sound that has produced hits like ‘Addicted’ and ‘I’d Do Anything.’

Aug 31: ACxDC and Spill Your Guts

Expect an extremely heavy nigh as Los Angeles grindcore act teams with Shanghai’s very own hardcore acts Fighting Back and Spill Your Guts (pictured above). The show will also double as the live debut for many of the tracks of Spill Your Guts’ excellent new EP, Full Blast!

Sep 1-5: MTA Shanghai

There’s a big electronic music festival going down at Beijing’s Sky Desert, and a trio of its international headliners will travel south to rock MAO Livehouse. On Sep 1, chart-topping electronic singer-songwriter-rapper Example is bringing his full band down. The next night, rising Norwegian producer Alan Walker will be joined by a special guest spinning melodic electro-house. Veteran live drum and bass band Rudimental will be joined by trumpeter Mark Crown for an extra soulful show on Sep 5. Three-day passes available for RMB500. Sep 2: Forsaken Autumn

The standout Shanghai shoegaze act finally officially celebrate the release of their excellent debut EP, Whenere. This hometown show kicks off a five-city national tour and they’ll be joined by other stalwarts of the scene, Dahlia Rosea and the Maybe Mars-signed Dream Can.

Sep 2-3: House of Vans

Huge news for hip hop fans as Native Tongues originals De La Soul is the special guest for this year’s House of Vans stop in Shanghai. It’s fantastic timing, as the legendary trio just released their first album in 11 years - the Kickstarter funded And The Anonymous Nobody… which has been racking up rve reviews. They’re headlining the September 3 show with Fari Faux and Mainland standouts, Soulspeak and J-Fever. On September 2, Brits Moose Blood headlines. Tickets are free but available only at Vans Stores at iAPM or Raffles (for Friday’s show) and to Fly Vans or Zhongshan Park store (for September’s show). It’s first come first serve and available only until 10am on September 1.

Sep 4: Video Games Live

This immersive concert brings together top orchestras and choirs performing live renditions of music from the most popular video games of all time. Praised as an experience enjoyed by the entire family, it mixes grand symphonic orchestra scores mixed with scenes from the games themselves.

Suicide Silence
Emerging out of Riverside, California, this deathcore act has been lauded by Revolver while releasing four disc of extremely heavy tunes.

Hot Lips Live Jazz Night
Every Wednesday to Saturday, Nana Lee and keyboardist/pianist OJ play smooth jazz at 1515 West Bar, complementing mixologist Macarena Rotger’s new cocktail menu.

YYT Folk Night
Yuyintang turns the stage over to the city's troubadours as part of their recurring Folk Night series.

The Pearl taps into Shanghai’s jazz golden age with this band specializing in adapting modern songs with a vintage 1920s swing twist. Tickets available through That’s.

Shake Grand Opening
While it’s been open for a few weeks now, jazz club/restaurant Shake celebrates its official grand opening with a night featuring four of the city’s finest singers.

The Taiwan act takes its name from the Ace of Spades and specialize in dark and epic tunes mining the human condition.

Jam Project
This anison (anime music) supergroup formed in 2000 under the tutelage of Ichirou Mizuki, famed for his 1970s theme songs. Expect a show full of the hits including those by the group’s individual members.

Tension Music 5th Anniversary
For their milestone showcase, Tension Music brings together four of the country’s finest acts: Frozen Street, Five Pointed Star, Cyclops and Return to Sender.

Xu Jun
The frontman for standout Hangzhou indie-rockers The Tree is touring the nation as a solo act to celebrate his newest folk-tinged disc.

Leslie Cheung Tribute Concert
MAO Livehouse hosts a trio of acts that will pay tribute to the mega-Hong Kong star who was a giant in Cantop and in the Hong Kong cinematic renaissance of the late 80s and early 90s.

M Talks China: Ren Yuqing
This month’s M Talks series is stacked and on Saturday, Glam welcomes the JZ Club founder to discuss how he established a jazz institution and its tentative October reopening in the new hotspot brewing at the old Datong Mill. Two jazz musicians wil perform following the talk.

Heike Kagler & The Paramecia
