1. Carol Faye: Business Card Required

Carol Faye: Business Card Required

The Shanghai-based, New York artist unveils her latest series of works inspired by observations of her adopted city creating urban portraits out of business cards. Opening cokctail reception goes down on August 20 from 2-6pm with short fiction and art-inspired poetry from Eddy Chin.

2. Total War or Nothing At All

Total War or Nothing At All

J:Gallery presents ‘Hot,’ the first episode in this serial exhibition. With a mandate of constructing and intensifying extreme environemnts and its effects on art, this group exhibition sees the artist coexist with an extreme hot environment, reflecting the conditions across a variety of mediums. Participants include Li Zhenhua, He Xiangyu, Chen Chenchen, Li Weiyi, Song Xi (see above), Lu Zhengyuan, Ye Nan, Zhang Quan and Ding Nan.

3. The Grand Voyage: A Man Upside Down

The Grand Voyage: A Man Upside Down

Two years ago, young contemporary artists Guo Xi and Zhang Jianling embarked on a long-term collaboration based on their love of the sea. They embarked on an 86 day world cruise but before that wrote and released “12 prophecies” about what they expected to happen. The Grand Voyage takes a literary approach, slowly unspooling the artists’ complex narrtive of the journey unveilled at acclaimed exhibitions at the 80 WSE Space in New York, ShanghArt Gallery, the Rockbund and more (see above and cover image). The latest chapter premieres at OCT Contemporary Art Terminal, a mix of notebook fragments and other works challenging visitors to connect the dots in their mammoth story.

4. Cracking Art: Animal Landing

Cracking Art: Animal Landing

Founded in 1993, the six-member artistic collective is devoted to creating eye-popping installations utilizing recycled plastics, exploring the harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Their first tour of China stops off at Xintiandi with 235 animal statues scattered around the area. Bring the little ones and see how many you can find.

5. Lu Xinjian: Jiangnan

Lu Xinjian: Jiangnan

Matthew Liu Gallery hosts this solo exhibition from the contemporary Chinese artist known for depicting ancient Chinese gardens deconstructed in a thoroughly modern way.

6. Turning Point: Contemporary Art in China Since 2000

Turning Point: Contemporary Art in China Since 2000

Renowned art historian and critic Professor Yi Ying curates this ambitious group exhibition focusing on this century of Chinese contemporary art. The exhibitions features over 52 artists/collectives with works spanning everything from animation to installations.
