Elderly residents of the Baba Community in Shanghai's Changning district never need to worry again about being trapped at home during an earthquake, fire or other natural disaster, thanks to a new invention from a 70-year-old man.

The 'Magical Stairs,' created by enterprising inventor Zhou Miaorong, allow residents of the community to slide down to the ground from as high as 26 floors up in just 90 seconds. The 'Magical Stairs' are essentially an escape slide made of stainless steel and aluminum, with a side buckle on the wall.

Zhou lives on the 35th floor along with his wife, children and grandchildren. "A senior citizen has to be prepared for danger," he said. "It's just wise, right?’

Zhou's ‘Magical Stairs’ have already been patented in the United States, Japan, Singapore and the EU.
