Passengers departing from Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport no longer need to undergo security checks at the terminal entrance.
Since August 2016, passengers at both Shanghai airports have been required to pass through two separate security checks—one at the terminal entrance and another when entering the departures area.
The measures had been implemented to bolster anti-terrorism efforts and prevent dangerous items from being brought into the airports, following an explosion at Pudong Airport's Terminal 2.
As of yesterday—Tuesday, August 12—the initial security checks at terminal entrances, including metal detectors and X-ray scanners, have been removed.
Instead, passengers will only pass through an explosives detection system, while baggage screening will now take place at airline counters during check-in.
Full-body and carry-on screening will still be conducted on entry to the departures area, maintaining the same level of safety as before.
The change is expected to reduce wait times and improve the flow of travelers.
