Not one, but two typhoons appear to be headed towards Shanghai this evening.
The two typhoons, which are the ninth and tenth of the year, have already passed through southeast China and are set to collide tonight before moving north.
But luckily for us, authorities say that Shanghai will mostly escape the worst of the typhoons.
Shanghai Daily reports that the city’s Weather Bureau has said that the typhoons will have little effect in downtown Shanghai, though they warn people along China's eastern coast to prepare for strong winds.
There will be the expected thunderstorms scattered about, but this is said to be pretty normal for this time of year. Some districts of Shanghai may see hourly precipitation of around 40 milimeters.
Meteorologists have been monitoring the typhoons and report that Nesat, the ninth, ripped
through Fujian province early on Sunday morning. The typhoon’s maximum winds reached 33 meters per second.
Following Nesat’s lead is Haitang. It passed through Fuijian this morning, with further landfall expected. Its winds are currently packing a punch of up to 20 meters per second.
By tonight, Haitang will have caught up with what remains of Nesat. The two typhoons will merge and head north towards Shanghai.
Authorities have said to expect cloudy weather through Wednesday.
On the plus side, looks like we'll finally get to cool down from this summer's record-breaking heatwave, as the mercury drops to around 34 degrees while the rain hits. Temperatures are expected to go back up to 35 degrees on Thursday.
