Lady M @ 1862 Theatre

Weixin-Image_20250704070044.jpg

Shakespeare’s Macbeth tells the story of a power-hungry couple consumed by guilt—but what if the tale was hers alone?

Lady M reimagines the classic tragedy through the eyes of its most infamous heroine, blending Western pop music with a bold, sung-through narrative.

Adapted by British composers James Beeny and Gina Georgio, and directed by China’s Xu Jun, this semi-immersive production breaks traditional staging with a dynamic, two-sided set at 1862 Theater, placing audiences at the heart of the action.

Starring Maya Hakvoort (Germany’s "Musical Queen"), Kerry Ellis (West End leading lady), and Chinese actresses Xu Lidong and Miao Mengchu as Lady Macbeth, alongside an international cast including Gian Marco Schiaretti (Notre-Dame de Paris) and Karl Queensborough (Hamilton) as Macbeth.

With striking mirrored staging reflecting Shakespeare’s "fair is foul" duality, Lady M becomes a psychological labyrinth—where ambition, madness, and fleeting humanity collide.

French Original Musical Molière @ Shanghai Culture Square

My name is Jean-Baptiste, Jean-Baptiste Poquelin.

I have set the course of my destiny, I have chosen to be a theater actor.

Molière is an indispensable part of French culture and a resounding name in the history of world theater. As one of the most significant writers of 17th-century French classicism, he was a pioneer of comedy, his works holding an important place in European theatrical history.

Centuries later, his plays still resonate. So it's hardly surprising to see Molière and his life transformed into an opera... somewhere between slam and rap.

That's the promise of Molière, L'opéra Urbain, produced by Dove Attia, the man behind such popular hits as The Ten Commandments, The Sun King and Mozart the Rock Opera.

While the sets and costumes will be period, 17th century, this is a staging that promises to be modern.

Enowate @ Shanghai International Dance Center

Sep-19.jpg

A dancer of extraordinary power and grace, Dickson Mbi summons multiple identities in this mesmerizing solo performance inspired by a life-changing journey to his ancestral home in Cameroon.

The symbolic presence of a two-headed snake, the tiger whose roar vibrated as part of a funeral ritual, the knowing touch of a blind elder… it was these unnerving encounters that profoundly affected the London choreographer during a recent trip to his family’s village.

They have all brought him closer to the animistic practices of his African heritage and to the mystical place where they meet with his modern East London upbringing.

Enowate, meaning ‘truth stands,’ draws on sinuous elements of hip-hop and contemporary dance in combination with original music and otherworldly animated projections.

In asking the relatable question ‘Who am I?’ he connects with enigmatic forces to reveal himself and emerge from the shadows.

Fireworks: Philharmonic String Quintet Berlin @ Shanghai Concert Hall

Weixin-Image_2025-08-14_153105_864.jpg

Shanghai Concert Hall will ignite with the symphonic brilliance of the Philharmonic String Quintet Berlin—an elite ensemble of Berliner Philharmoniker principals whose unconventional lineup (featuring a double bass) expands the colors and power of chamber music.

Their program, Fireworks, blends classical mastery with virtuosic sparks, from Dvořák’s lush String Quintet No. 3 to Paganini’s dazzling La Campanella (arranged for viola) and Bottesini’s Mendelssohn-inspired Grande Allegro for double bass.

Celebrated for their "symphonic abundance" (Wiesbadener Zeitung), the quintet transforms Mozart’s Figaro Overture and Sarasate’s Carmen Fantasy into electrifying miniatures, while Bernstein’s West Side Story and Janis Joplin’s Purple Haze reveal their playful versatility.

Each member—including cellist Tatjana Vassiljeva (Royal Concertgebouw principal) and violinist Luiz Filipe Coelho—brings soloistic prowess to this rare collaboration, offering a concert that’s "an absolute delight from first note to last."

tick, tick…BOOM! @ Shangyin Opera House

Weixin-Image_20250731145105.jpg

tick, tick…BOOM! is the semi-autobiographical masterpiece by musical theatre legend Jonathan Larson, best known for his iconic work Rent. Larson poured all his anxieties, passion, and creative struggles leading up to age 30 into this one piece.

It tells a story that resonates with every dreamer. Jon, a young composer of musical theater, is about to turn 30 but finds himself stuck between dream and reality. Living in a cramped New York apartment, he waits tables by day and works tirelessly on his musical by night.

Meanwhile, those around him choose more conventional paths—his girlfriend longs for a stable life, and his best friend has left the performing art industry for a corporate career. With time running out, Jon faces the ultimate question—should he give in to reality or risk everything for his dream?

Featuring explosive rock music and emotionally resonant lyrics, the show paints an honest portrait of a young artist fighting to stay true to his vision.

More than just Larson’s artistic confession, the work has inspired generations of creators—including Hamilton’s Lin-Manuel Miranda.

In 2021, the story reached global audiences once again through the acclaimed Netflix adaptation starring Andrew Garfield, which won a Golden Globe and reignited interest in this timeless gem.

Making its China debut in Shanghai, a top-tier creative team from London West End has come together to deliver a brand-new production, complete with stunning stage design and a powerful live band.

With an electrifying score and a deeply moving story, the show will strike a chord with every soul that refuses to settle for the ordinary.

Muerta de Amor @ Shanghai International Dance Center

Weixin-Image_20250703071612.jpg

Following the sensational ¡VIVA!, Spanish National Dance Award-winner Manuel Liñán returns to Shanghai with his audacious new flamenco masterpiece, Muerta de Amor.

Premiered at the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla, this all-male production deconstructs love’s paradoxes through raw vocals, thunderous footwork, and the haunting strains of traditional Copla music.

Twelve artists blur gender and tradition, weaving desire and defiance into a visceral tapestry. Dark costumes slash against a pink-black set, embodying love’s duality—fragile yet fierce.

Liñán’s choreography, drawn from his own romantic history, interrogates intimacy: How does love live? How does it die?

The answers unfold in a whirlwind of clapping, stomping, and soul-baring dance.

A rare collaboration between two of China’s most celebrated virtuosos: violinist Ning Feng (2006 Paganini Competition winner) and classical guitarist Xuefei Yang (Gramophone-listed “top guitarist”).

United by their shared roots and decades of friendship since studying at London’s Royal Academy of Music, the duo presents a program blending Western masterpieces with Eastern tributes.

At its heart lies Paganini’s fiery Sonata Concertata—a showcase of technical brilliance by the “devil’s violinist”—paired with Schubert’s lyrical Arpeggione Sonata, inspired by the composer’s awe of “angelic” music.

The concert also features solo interludes, including Yang’s rendition of Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 and Feng’s take on Tárrega’s Recuerdos de la Alhambra, alongside Chinese classics like Fisherman’s Song at Eventide.

A night of passion, precision, and cross-cultural dialogue, Devils and Angels promises to captivate with its fusion of intimacy and virtuosity.

Walking Tours

GPS Walks

Weixin-Image_20241108140456.jpg

GPS Walks is a walking tour WeChat mini-program which uses your location to play commentary automatically, so that while you walk you can listen and focus on your surroundings.

You can start your walk at any time and stop whenever and wherever you like, for as long as you like. You don’t even need to hit pause; when you start moving again, the playback will continue.

You can follow your progress on a map, but the commentary also gives you directions, so you don’t need to be glued to your screen.

They currently have seven walks online, each one lasting around one-and-a-half hours. On each tour there are some well known and famous places, and great photo opportunities, but also some hidden gems tucked away for people to discover.

The aim is to pick out the stories that bring a bit of Old Shanghai to life, and go a little bit deeper than the dry statistics there might be on the plaque on the outside of a building.

Price: Each walk is RMB60 individually, or RMB99 for a one day unlimited pass, and RMB149 for a two day unlimited pass.

The first major posthumous retrospective of the recently departed Sebastião Salgado (1944–2025).

As one of the most influential documentary photographers of the contemporary era, Salgado's photographs operate not only as historical documents but as interventions within cultural and political discourse.

From the famines and wars of 1970s Africa to laborers in the tide of global industrialization, from rural Latin American cultures to the untouched wonders of Genesis, his work documents the human condition, global inequalities, and the fragile relationship between humanity and the natural world through incisive insight and a distinctive aesthetic.

Widely recognized for the aesthetic rigor and ethical urgency of his work, Salgado's images transcend conventional documentary photography, offering a visual language that merges journalistic inquiry with a profound humanist perspective, creating timeless works of both social significance and artistic mastery.

His lens gave visibility to the invisible, the marginalized, and the endangeredall are rendered visible with clarity and monumental beauty, challenging audiences to confront the social, environmental, and ethical urgencies of our time.

Weixin-Image_20250805091138.jpg

The first comprehensive showcase in China of Nøtel, a groundbreaking solo exhibition by artist Lawrence Lek.

Continuously evolving since 2015, the project envisions a speculative model of future habitation, one that is fully globalized, standardized, and fundamentally transient.

During the exhibition, Fotografiska’s space will be transformed into a real estate marketing suite for the fictional Nøtel Corporation, Lek’s design for the luxury hotel of the future.

This immersive advertisement allows visitors to experience Nøtel through interactive video games, guided walkthrough trailers, and CGI prints, presenting the global hotel chain as if it already exists.

With music composed by electronic musician Kode 9 (Steve Goodman), the exhibition immerses audiences in a futuristic space oscillating between luxurious experiences and technological alienation.

Artists group exhibition 'Photographic Geomancy: Image, Fieldwork, and the Poetics of Geography,' featuring the works of 20 artists working at the intersections of art, geography, geology, and geopolitics.

The exhibition is organized into multiple interconnected sections, which are based on the substance and issues explored by the artists in their work. It invites the audience to explore the mountains, rivers, and historical aspects of China, following the artists' journey.

Digital artist Huang Hexhan's latest solo exhibition 'Too Rich City: The Old White Swan Passenger' will guide audiences through a phantasmagoric journey traversing virtual and physical realities.

The exhibition presents a chrono-virtual voyage centered around the fantastical journey of the 'Old White Swan'—a narrative depicting how, after the demolition of Zhongshan Park, an antiquated pleasure craft retrieves its final passenger: the goddess statue Jingyue.

Visitors will board this temporal vessel to navigate through Too Rich City's surreal landscapes, ultimately returning to the park's inaugural day, thus completing an ouroboric cycle of urban memory.
