A lovesick Dutch man recently spent 10 days in a Chinese airport waiting for a girlfriend he met online to pick him up.

41-year-old Alexander Pieter Cirk told Changsha Huanghua International Airport authorities that he had met the woman, surnamed Zhang, online two months earlier.

Zhang never turned up, and reportedly said that her no-show was due to the fact that she was getting plastic surgery 900 kilometers away in Zhengzhou, Henan province. Zhang said she had no idea Cirk was coming and claimed that she thought he was joking when he showed her his plane ticket to China.

"I had to stay at the airport because I had no money," the forlorn Cirk told local media.

Following his 10 day stint in the airport, Cirk — who suffers from diabetes — was taken away to a nearby hospital to be treated for exhaustion.
