Just weeks before Shenzhen marks the 45th anniversary of its designation as China’s first Special Economic Zone, the city has broken ground on a significant expansion at Shenzhen Bao’an International Airport.
On August 23, officials, aviation leaders, and airline representatives gathered for the launch of construction on the long-anticipated T2 terminal area, a new northern cargo hub, and supporting infrastructure.

The T2 terminal is set to handle 31 million passengers annually across a vast 400,000-square-meter footprint.
The plan includes the main T2 terminal building, 53 aircraft stands, a 30,000-square-meter rail transfer hub, a 30,000-square-meter ground transport center, and a 143,500-square-meter parking complex.
Once complete, it will operate in tandem with the existing T3 terminal and satellite hall, forming the airport’s central terminal zone.
Efficient connectivity is central to the project.
Passengers will enjoy direct links to the Guangzhou–Dongguan–Shenzhen Intercity Railway, Shenzhen Metro Lines 11 and 20, as well as the future Shenzhen–Daya Bay Intercity line.
An automated people mover system will also connect T2 with T3 and the satellite hall.
The northern cargo hub, designated as a national key project, will span 804,000 square meters with 570,600 square meters of construction area.
Once operational, it will boost capacity by more than 1.8 million tons annually, strengthening logistics for high-end manufacturing, cross-border e-commerce, and cold-chain industries across the Greater Bay Area.
The timing couldn’t be better.
Shenzhen Airport has been hitting record highs, surpassing 60 million passengers in 2024 for the first time.
From January to July this year, it processed roughly 38 million passengers and 1.16 million tons of cargo and mail—the strongest performance for the same period since its opening.
Currently, the airport serves 63 all-cargo destinations worldwide, including 43 international and regional points across five continents.
With T2, the northern cargo hub, three runways, and expanded passenger facilities in the pipeline, Shenzhen Bao’an is positioning itself as a world-class international aviation hub at the heart of the Greater Bay Area.
