WIN! Migas Mercado New Menu: High-Quality Food & Classy Clubbing

We are a bit ashamed to admit that before sitting down for lunch at Migas Mercado last week, the features we most associated the moniker ‘Migas' with were DJs and dancing – rather than inspired dining and designer drinks.

To us, it was a club, but we could not have been more wrong.

Migas Mercado is a damn good restaurant that foodies, and well, anybody who enjoys high-quality food should try.

And lucky for you, two That's Beijing readers have a chance to win a free set lunch by sharing this article!

Despite the number of times we have been to Migas for a night of tasteful debauchery, it was a bit disorienting trying to find our way through the World Trade Center in the daylight – but it’s a journey we realized is worth making again very soon.

The view from Migas is just as stunning during the day as it is at night, with the iconic landmarks of the Central Business District towering to the south.

We dined at Migas to check out their new menu and discovered a whole new side of the spot that has had a place in the hearts of Beijingers for going on 15 years.

Migas encapsulates the vibrant flavors of Spain – their food is a tribute to the recipes’ roots in sun-kissed coasts, sizzling paellas, and the traditions of shared tapas.

To start with, each of the dishes is wonderfully presented, with well-designed arrangements and bright colors indicative of the freshness of every morsel on the plate.

The first thing you will notice when you dig into anything on offer is the quality and crispness of the ingredients – everything, from the garnishes to the meat, is meticulously sourced.

The head chef, Miguel, knows his stuff – he even worked for the royal family of Qatar, and he has brought his experience to Migas to make the menu fit for a king.

Miguel can tell you where each ingredient comes from, and most of them are painstakingly prepared in his kitchen.

For example, the new Russian Salad, Fried Egg & Cured Fish (RMB88) is made with carefully picked black bonito that is cured for three weeks on-site, which helps preserve its delicate texture and soften its fragrant aroma.

The savory fillet is perfectly balanced by the smooth egg yolk that bursts over the creamy Russian salad.

Another great addition to their menu is the Galician-Style Tuna Pie (RMB28) – it’s a tuna empanadilla with tuna tartar that is a fresh take on Galicia’s classic empanada and was inspired by chef Miguel’s family’s Galician roots.

They’ve kept the heart of the recipe – a flaky, golden crust just like his abuela used to make – but added a playful surprise: a bright, zesty tuna tartar piled high on top.

Even if tongue isn’t typically your thing, the Smoked Beef Tongue Served with Fresh Hummus & Fried Artichokes (RMB88) is tender, smoky, and bursting with flavor – how can it not be after being marinated for three days, slow-cooked for 15 hours, and then smoked for six? That tasty tongue will give you something to talk about!

If you’re a fan of seafood there are two fantastic options we suggest you try: the Charcoal Roasted Octopus Served with ‘Chermoula’ Sauce, & Potato and Yogurt Salad (RMB188) and the Signature Migas Seafood Paella (RMB348).

Chef Miguel selects only the highest-quality imported octopus, which he slow-cooks before roasting in a Josper oven, preserving its natural, briny juiciness.

The soft paella is topped with some of the most succulent shrimp we have ever had in addition to a smorgasbord of other lip-smacking good seafood.

And we know that you were intrigued to try some of this ‘Qatar royal family food,’ so you won’t want to leave without trying the Spiced Lamb Skewers Served with Flat Bread, Couscous & Yogurt Sauce (RMB248) – the skewers are so moist it almost seems impossible they have been barbequed.

Last, but not least, you can try Miguel’s former employer’s favorite dessert: Pistaccio Baklava, Fig Compote & Ricotta Cream (RMB88 *serves 3-4 people), nicknamed the ‘Qatari Queen’s Delight.’

Indulge yourself in its crispy layers, crunchy pistachios, smooth cream, and sweet fig flavor that come together to activate your tastebuds in perfect harmony – yes, it’s really that good.

There are more new dishes to try, but we will leave some of the surprises for your next visit.
