The January 2018 issue of That's Beijing is out now – paper-and-ink form citywide, digital pdf form right here or in your browser here. Editor-in-Chief Noelle Mateer introduces the magazine:
When I first moved to Beijing and started working for That’s, I had no friends. None! Look, I know what you’re thinking: How is that possible? Noelle is so cool, and very popular! But hey – I was new in town. And so I approached friend-making like my mother would approach shopping for reasonably priced sweaters: thoroughly and methodically. I attended all the events. I got all the WeChats. I shook all the hands.
Fortunately, I had a leg up. As That’s Food & Drink Editor, I was constantly meeting the incredible people behind the city’s bustling bar-and-restaurant scene. And damn, if you’re looking for friends, these are the ones to meet.No group of people are more friendly and more fun-loving than F&B professionals – hell, it’s their job to be friendly and fun-loving. So our That’s Beijing Golden Fork Restaurant Awards are always a highlight of my year: Beijing’s finest and most fabulous food makers – or as I like to call them, my friends – gather together to celebrate why they make our city so great. See p.40 for our full list of winners (and photos from our 70s disco-themed awards party).
Elsewhere in the magazine, Dominique Wong gives us the low-down on China’s most high-tech pollution mask (p. 22); Dominic Ngai compiles stunning drone shots from China’s up-and-coming photographers (p. 10); and Erica Martin interviews indie rockers The Pains of Being Pure at Heart ahead of their Beijing gig (p. 36).
On a sadder note, I’d like to say farewell to my wonderful colleague Justine Lopez, as she leaves Beijing for Ho Chi Minh City. Justine, who has served as our Digital Content Editor for the past two years, has not only been crucial to the success of our website, but also a delight to have in the office. Godspeed, Justine – you will be missed. (Tip for anyone with wanderlust: Follow along with all of her adventures at travel-lush.com. I know I’ll be.)
Happy New Year,
Noelle Mateer
Editor-in-Chief
