Jun 21: Fete de la Musique
Fête de la Musique (aka World Music Day) takes place every year on the day of summer solstice (Wednesday June 21). Over 100 countries around the word participate in the live music festivities. The first ever event was held in France in 1982, but the Fête de la Musique made its way to Beijing in 2012. A bunch of venues will be taking part this year, including Yue Space, Yugong Yishan, Modernsky Lab, DDC and School Live Bar. At Yugong Yishan Las Aves, indie darlings Residence A and Beijing’s own Gate To Otherside (pictured above) will be performing, but you can basically head to any live music venue and expect a good show. It’s a good day for music.
Wed Jun 21, 9pm; Various venues, see event listing.
Jun 23: Carsick Cars
If we need to introduce Carsick Cars to you, then you’ve gotta go back and do your Chinese indie homework. These are the breakout stars of the Beijing scene. This is the trio responsible for independent label Maybe Mars’ second ever record. These are the guys who supported Sonic Youth in Europe. This is the band behind that veritable indie rock anthem ‘Zhongnanhai.’ You know them, right? If not, get to know. Support comes from Chui Wan, a band described in these very pages as “exploring the artier side of psychedelia… opting for locked-in grooves rather than ear-splitting distortion.” Yeah we’re quoting our own articles. Deal with it.
Fri Jun 23, RMB100 (advance), RMB150 (door). Yugong Yishan, see event listing.
Jun 23: Ember Swift
Beijing-based Canadian artist Ember Swift will be headlining a live show at School Bar on Friday. Summer is here and school really is out, so School Bar is celebrating the season with one last party before everyone leaves town for the summer. Expect good times and great music.
Fri Jun 23, 9pm. RMB50 (advance), RMB60 (door). School Bar, see event listing.
Jun 23-24: Eliane Elias
Eliane Elias is many things and prolific is one of them. The Brazilian singer and jazz pianist has 26 albums and a Grammy Award for Best Latin Jazz Album under her belt. She'll be performing two shows this weekend at Blue Note Beijing.
Fri-Sat Jun 23-24, 7:30-9pm; RMB380-580. Blue Note Beijing, see event listing.
Jun 24: P.K. 14
Few bands have solidified a space for themselves in the Chinese rock narrative the way P.K. 14 have. Active for more than 20 years, the foursome have grown from a plucky DIY punk troupe in Nanjing to an act often cited as not just one of, but the most influential band in China. In their music and lyrics, they’ve always struck a delicate balance between embodying the protest ethos of punk and a more thoughtful, reflective quality, which has inspired legions of younger bands and catapulted them to international renown. The band is comprised of guitarist Xu Bo, bassist Shi Xudong, drummer Jonathan Leijonhufvud (who’s Swedish but has lived in China for much of his life), and vocalist Yang Haisong.
Sat Jun 24, 8.30pm, RMB100 presale, RMB150 door. Yue Space, see event listing.
