Visitors to Beijing’s 798 Art District on Wednesday were horrified when they noticed a large black dog roaming around the area with an arrow through its head, People's Daily Online reports. Witnesses said that the 27-inch arrow pierced the pup from its upper head to its ear. Surprisingly, they did not see any blood coming from the wound.

Onlookers said that the dog continued to rub its head and whine in apparent discomfort. Many attempted to help the petrified pooch, which has now been nicknamed Big Black (Dahei). One man was seen trying to put a quilt over the dog in order to survey the damage, but it only frightened it.

Before too long police officers and veterinarians appeared on the scene. Beijing Jiuxianqiao Animal Hospital actually sent out three doctors. After they finally captured the three-year-old dog, they were able to transport it to the animal hospital where the arrow was removed after a long and painstaking surgery.

According to a report, the surgery was performed by Dr Liu. “The arrow went above its eyes and through the external auditory canal. The injury is very serious however fortunately it did not hit the brain,” Liu said.

It’s a horrifying story and no one knows who exactly shot Big Black. However, there have been eyewitness accounts of people shooting arrows around the 798 Art District.

The arrow was made of plastic and had a metal tip.

But the good news is that thanks to the help of caring citizens and doctors, Big Black is safe and in recovery. Concerned citizens are now in the process of finding the pup a new (and hopefully loving!) home. In the meantime animal lovers have donated their time to visit with Big Black and many are even donating money.

A WeChat group was started in order to raise money for Big Black. So far they have gathered RMB10,000.

It’s no wonder why this story has sparked such outrage on social media. And many are demanding an investigation into this case of animal cruelty. On QQ user said, “This must be investigated or this will encourage others.”

It remains uncertain if the case will be investigated by police. But at least for now Big Black is safe and sound.
