Oct 22-28: Sasha's Oktoberfest

Sasha’s brings Munich to Shanghai with its first ever Oktoberfest celebrations. Enjoy fun and feasting at its outdoor gardens, with a traditional Bavarian band serenading the Erdinger tent that holds up to 250 people. Enjoy a full Bavarian buffet topped off with pints of Erdinger.

Oct 26-Nov 1: Burn the Floor

This high-voltage theatrical experience breathes new life into traditional dances like the Viennese Waltz and Foxtrot. Burn the Floor explodes with jaw-dropping choreography, searing in the passion of the tango and pasodoble and reveling in the sheer energy of the cha cha, the samba, rumba and jive. The breathtaking moves and heart-pounding music creates a dramatic show that Heat Magazine declares “will have you leaping out of your seat to join in.”

Oct 27: Hotel Transylvania 2

201510/hoteltransylvania2.jpgAdam Sandler returns as the voice of Count Dracula, whose daughter Mavis (Selena Gomez) and human husband Jonathan (Andy Samberg) now have a young son with a lack of vampire abilities. When Dracula tries to intervene, he receives an unexpected visit from his human-hating father Vlad (Mel Brooks). Released last month, it set a box office record for the biggest opening weekend in September in America.


Oct 27: The Taming of the Shrew

tamingoftheshrew1.jpgTNT Theatre Britain returns to the Lyceum Theatre with an adaptation of one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. The Taming of the Shrew follows Petruchio’s attempts to woo the headstrong Katherina. The globetrotting theater group has established itself as a Mainland staple with company founder Paul Stebbings receiving an MBE in 2013 for his cultural efforts in China.

Oct 27-31: Dine on Chef Giancarlo Perbellini’s food

The celebrated Italian chef brings the signature dishes from his two Michelin star Casa Perbellini restaurant to Calypso, as part of the Shangri-La International Festival of Gastronomy. Pick between three-course lunches or three-to-four-course dinners. Option to pair dishes with fine wines are available from RMB200/package and a la carte options begin at RMB140/dish.

Oct 28-29: Three Masters of 20th-Century Art by Martha Graham Dance Company

Described by the Washington Post as “one of the seven wonders of the artistic universe,” the Martha Graham Dance Company remains one of America’s most respected dance troupes. Nearly 90 years after its founding, it remains a vital entity. For this show, they pay tribute to three masters of 20th century art – artist Pablo Picasso, composer Igor Stravinsky and their legendary choreographer (as well as, company namesake) Martha Graham. Expect a wide range of dances enhanced with short narration, media and music.

Oct 28-Nov 1: Ni Hao Italy Food, Music & Culture Festival

To celebrate the success of 2015 Milano Expo, Xintiandi hosts Shanghai’s first festival celebrating Italian food, music and culture. True Italian brands will serve as vendors bringing the best of their country to Shanghai. Expect plenty of musical performances, Italian wine tastings and amazing food from all of the country’s regions.

Oct 29: The Fall Designer Market

Shanghai Creatives take over the Shanghai Centre with their designer’s showcase. Check out the autumn collections by Shanghai’s top designers and meet some of the people behind the scene.

Oct 29-Nov 3: European Food Festival

For the first time, the European Food Festival takes over the Bund waterfront to celebrate the 40th anniversary of EU-China diplomatic relations. The event will showcase an array of restaurants, imported food and dairy products, wine and beers including Belgian waffles, German sausages, French bakery products, Dutch cheese, Greek gyros, Irish beer, Austrian ribs and loads more. You’ll get to enjoy live cooking shows and cultural performances while children will have fun with their own cooking activities on weekends.

Oct 29-Nov 8: The Devil’s Fables

Based on Aesop’s classic stories, this comedic musical follow three sinners who discover a much different version of hell than they imagined. They must participate in this hell carnival at the behest of Lucifer himself. The show is the first for Twisted Carousel Theatre and Paper Street Production, which are run by Shanghai stage veterans Tim College, Lexi Kalteis, Kaylie Keefe and Danny Wall. Expect a mix of fire, knife throwing, acrobatics and song. For more, check out our feature on the show.

Oct 30: Mountains May Depart

201510/mountainsmaydepart.jpgDirector Jia Zhangke might be the most celebrated Chinese filmmaker abroad. After the controversy around his Golden Horse nomiated modern wuxia film, A Touch of Sin, he returns with a multi-generational drama that’s already competed for the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The three-part film follows a single family through a rapidly changing China. The melancholic story begins in the 1990s with a classic love triangle, with a young singer choosing between the flashy young capitalist Zhang and the humble coalminer Liangzi. Tao agress to marry Zhang, but she reconnects with Liangzi in the present day. The film concludes in futuristic Australia following Zhang and Tao’s now college age son who is completely disconnected from his Chinese roots.


Oct 30: More than Aware Fifth Annual Luncheon

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the Shanghai-based charity is hosting its fifth annual luncheon auction. This year will have a Pink and Green theme, emphasizing the importance of a green and healthy lifestyle. Expect to hear empowering stories and wellness advice from experts. Guests will receive a deluxe gift bag and proceeds will go to support local organizations like the Shanghai Cancer Recovery Club. Oct 30: Sarment aperitivo

Sarmet teams up with 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bombana to raise a glass to Henri Giraud Champagne. Two glasses are available for RMB180 with guests receiving a 10 percent food discount if they stay for dinner.

Oct 30: Clue! A Jean-Georges Dinner Party

Shanghai Supperclub celebrates its second anniversary by teaming up with Three on the Bund for a night of fine cuisine, subtle secrets and fabulous prizes. Chefs from Jean-George’s acclaimed dining venues will bring distinctive flavors and guests are encouraged to dress like they have a secret to hide.

Oct 30: Theatersports Zmackdown

Oct 30: Elenore

The Beijing-based indie favorites have crafted a sound inspired by acts like Oasis and Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The Xiami and Douban favorites are in the midst of a national tour, celebrating the release of their debut album The King of the Circus on the respected indie label, Tree Music.

Oct 30: Lakker

lakker.jpgSpace Debris Committee and Wooozy Offline presents this live A/V show by the Berlin-based, Dublin-born duo. Expect to hear their distinctive ‘techno-not-techno’ sounds that will be showcased in their upcoming debut disc, the startlingly original Tundra.

Oct 30-31: That’s Shanghai Halloween Party

It’s almost the time of year for ghoulish get-ups and we couldn’t be more excited. Once again, That’s Shanghai is hosting a hell of a bash, so big that it’s spilling over two days. Prizes will be awarded for best dressed and tickets get you three drinks. For our full breakdown of Halloween events, check back this week.

Oct 30-Nov 1: Salzburg Puppet Theatre

201510/soundofmusic1.jpgThe historic and awad-winning Salzburg Puppet Theatre present their adaptation of the Tony Award winning classic The Sound of Music that produced such iconic songs as ‘Do-Re-Mi,’ ‘Eidelweiss’ and the title song from Oct 30-31. On Nov 1, they tackle another classic – Nutcracker.

Oct 30-Nov 1: World Endurance Championship

worldendurancechampionships.jpgThis race brings the “spirit of Le Mans” to Shanghai. The big race is on Sunday, qualifying heats on Saturday and free practice sessions go down on Friday.

Oct 30-Nov 8: Nordic Design and Innovation Week 2015

For the third straight year, the consulate generals of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden team up for this celebration of Nordic design. This year spotlights Nordic Spaces with 10 days of seminars, workshops and public exhibitions. Discover technological innovations and Nordic design ideals like sustainability and beauty through simplicity and functionality. More information available at their website.

Oct 31: Urban Family Kids Halloween Party

For a more family-friendly Halloween party, our sister publication Urban Family is teaming up with Wellington College for a daytime party. There will be four areas: a performance stage, a vendors’ section, a food and drinks market and, most importantly, a games zone. Kids can enjoy all the traditional All Hallows’ Eve activities from pumpkin carving to apple bobbing. There’s lively dress up games like mummy wrapping and a haunted house for the brave ones.

Until Oct 31: Rugby World Cup

New Zealand attempts to hold onto one of rugby union’s grandest prizes. Games are going all month in England culminating in the October 31 final. Several place across towns are showing games, even the one that start at 3am. For more, check out the That’s Shanghai Guide to the Rugby World Cup.


Oct 31-Nov 1: NFL Home Field

This massive celebration of American football features interactive game, family friendly exercise clinics, exhibition games and a chance to partake in NFL China’s national FLAG tournament. It’s the final NFL Home Field event before University Bowl VII, which also takes place at Luwan Stadium from November 14-15.

Oct 31-Nov 1: Stellar Chef at 10 Corso Como

10 Corso Como hosts two Michelin star chef Fulvio Pierangelini for a unique epicurean experience. A five-course surprise menu dinner is available on October 31-Nov 1 for RMB888 with a three-course lunch option for RMB388 on Nov 1. He will also host a lecture on October 31 at 3pm.

Oct 31-Nov 8: Shanghai International Literary Festival

Bibliophiles of the city, rejoice! The multi-faceted wonders of the written word are being made manifest once more, as literati from around the world alight in Shanghai to dazzle with their wit and wisdom. From a Pulitzer Prize winner and a master of modern fantasy, to a football-loving slam poet and a wild-eyed traveler wandering the Australian desert with camels, every creed of author is appearing at M on the Bund to pay homage to the delight of reading from October 31-November 8. Nov 1: NFL International Series Games Viewing Parties

201510/nflviewingparty.jpgThe National Football League (NFL) continues its rampant efforts to spread America's most favorite sport abroad. Their efforts in England are starting to pay off, with last month's game between the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets drawing nearly 84,000 to Wembley Stadium. There's one more international game on tap with the Detroit Lions battling the the Kansas City Chiefs on November 1. One nice effect of the London start times is that it gives football fans in China a rare chance to watch a live game at night. Several places are planning tailgate viewing parties at The Rooster and other locations. Check back for more details.


Nov 1-3: 2015 China Cigar Festival

Cigar Ambassador has organized the fourth edition of this celebration of all things cigars. On the schedule are a Huangpu River Cruise (Nov 1, RMB500), seminars and other workshops at 1933 (Nov 2, 9am-noon, 1.30-5pm, RMB500), a gala dinner presented by Carlito Fuente (Nov 2, 7pm, 2,000-3,000) and a cigar tasting on Nov 3.
