The sad saga of missing flight MH370 took a turn for the ridiculous this week when Malaysian authorities hired a bomoh, or shaman, to help find the plane.
Ibrahim Mat Zin, also known as the Raja Bomoh Sedunia Nujum VIP, performed a prayer at Kuala Lumpur International Airport Monday to help find the missing Malaysia Airlines jet, allegedly at the invitation of a top government official.
"I think the plane is still in the air or has crashed into the sea," he told reporters.
On the Chinese web, where many commenters have echoed the country's leaders in expressing frustration with Malaysian efforts to find the plane, Zin was ridiculed and dismissed as a "witch doctor".
Zin is no stranger to charlatinism, he rose to fame offering his "services" in the search for victims in several major natural disasters, including the 1994 Highland Tower tragedy in which 48 people died.
According to the SCMP, over 200 Malaysians were defrauded of over 23 million yuan ($3.7 million) in 2012 by bomohs.
