Following the death of a 6-year-old boy caused by a window that fell from the 20th floor of a Shenzhen resident complex earlier this month, a similar incident occurred in Jiangsu’s capital city of Nanjing.
On June 19, a 10-year-old girl was seriously injured by a falling object at Shidai Tiandi Square in Nanjing’s Gulou district, according to a CCTV report. The young girl was taken to a hospital immediately after the unfortunate incident. Nearby residents claimed this wasn’t their first time seeing objects falling from nearby buildings.
Videos posted on various Chinese news outlets show the graphic scene after the victim was reportedly hit on the head, lost consciousness and collapsed on the ground. Thankfully, her condition is now stable after receiving treatment, according to Southern Metropolis Daily.
After their investigation, the Gulou Branch of Nanjing Public Security Bureau posted a report on Weibo, identifying an 8-year-old boy as the person who tossed the life-threatening object off the apartment buidling. The object, however, has not yet been specified by police. At the end of the report, Nanjing police warned residents of the consequences that will result from tossing objects out of high-rise buildings.
In Singapore, an object that is thrown out or falls off a tall building is termed ‘killer litter.’ People who are convicted of a killer litter offense are “liable to a maximum jail term of five years or a fine, or both,” according to the Housing and Development Board of Singapore. In China, recklessly discarding an object from a tall building has yet to become a criminal offense, and regulations on the matter vary from city to city.
