Cities across the Pearl River Delta issued blue typhoon warnings Tuesday morning in anticipation of the 16th typhoon of the season, Bebinca.

Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Foshan have all published blue alerts, while Jiangmen has issued a white typhoon warning (as of 2.04pm).

In Hong Kong, the Hong Kong Observatory issued a No. 3 typhoon signal this morning at 5.20am. A No. 3 typhoon signal is also in effect in Macau, and the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau said this morning that the chance of a No. 8 signal being raised on Tuesday afternoon is “relatively high.”

The storm has already paid a visit to the northwestern portion of Hainan Island and southern Guangdong, and is presently off the coast of Guangdong, between Yangjiang and Hong Kong.

Typhoon Bebinca is projected to make landfall sometime this evening to the west of Macau, and is expected to unload a day or two’s worth of rain on the PRD region before moving further west to Vietnam – where the storm is expected to arrive on Friday

As we reported yesterday, both Guangzhou and Shenzhen can expect sporadic rainfall for the rest of the week.

Officials in both Hainan and Guangdong are warning about possible landslides, mudslides and floods that may accompany Bebinca. The provincial weather bureau in Guangdong has listed Guangzhou’s Conghua District among the province’s 50 areas most at risk of flash floods, landslides and the like.
