New Guangzhou Metro Station Will Be Largest in Asia

Work has formally begun on a truly ambitious project for the Guangzhou Metro Corporation. Clocking in at a whopping 78,600 square meters, Tianhe Park Station, part of Phase II of the very-soon-to-be launched Metro Line 13, will far surpass in size any other station currently under construction on the entire continent, Southern Metropolis Daily reports

To put that number in perspective for you: Tianhe Park will be more than double the size of Gongyuanqian Station and bigger than three Yangji Stations put together. The new hub will eventually boast transfers to Lines 21 and 11, which have been approved for construction but not yet built.

Last week, we covered the imminent opening of the first phase of Guangzhou’s long awaited Metro Line 13, whose extra-wide-gauge train carriages and widely spaced stations will combine to produce high passenger capacities and breakneck commuting speeds of over 100 kilometers per hour. When doors open tomorrow, the new east-west express line will begin zipping riders from the near fringes of Zengcheng District to Line 5’s Yuzhu Station.

Phase II, however, which will include Tianhe Park Station, is where things really get interesting. That’s when the monstrous, people-moving powerhouse that local journalists have affectionately dubbed ‘the Leviathan,’ will run westward through the densest portions of central Guangzhou, greatly reducing pressure and congestion from other crosstown routes like Line 1. This mass transit promised land may yet be a distant dream, but that’s not stopping the tireless workers of the Guangzhou Metro Corp from pressing on with their righteous toil.
