It’s not easy being overweight. And yet a higher-than-average BMI may have saved one woman's life recently in Huizhou, Guangdong.

Yesterday (August 9) police called the local 'Heart-to-heart Volunteer Rescue Team' at 6.30am, asking for help with a woman who had just jumped off Hesheng Bridge, in the vicinity of Huizhou's famous West Lake.

Team leader Zhao Xicang assembled his group and, with a few police officers, sped towards the scene of the attempted suicide in a speedboat. Along the way, they discussed the rescue plan for the presumably drowning woman.

But to their surprise, after arriving Zhao and his team found the woman floating in the water, still breathing and apparently unhurt.

With help from the local fire department and public security and medical staff, the rescue team quickly brought the woman ashore. After basic examinations and a scolding from Zhao, she was sent to a hospital for further care.

This past February, a similar incident happened when a suicidal woman found herself unable to drown in Zhongshan, Guangdong, according to a report carried by China.com. Rescuers in a fishing boat pulled her out of the water, where she had been at risk of being hit by passing ships.
